Mas respuestas de Canadienses…

by Guillermo on March 12, 2008

Enzo nos envía las respuestas de una persona de su conocimiento a las preguntas que planteáramos hace unas semanas atrás… Gracias Enzo!

1. What are the main characteristics that define a Canadian?

A Canadian may be anything. There are native Canadians, french Canadians and immigrant Canadians. Many Canadians call themselves Scottish Canadians, British Canadians, Asian Canadians and I personally wish that people would be JUST CANADIAN.

In most cases Canadians put up with high taxes, big government and slow bureaucracy and do not complain as they should. They brag about a borken health care system.

2. What would you change in Canada, if you could?

I would make it 20 degrees warmer, winter and summer. I would get rid of government and permit laissez faire.

3. Honestly, do you really believe that multiculturalism is a benefit for Canada? Its risks include the creation of cultural ghettos. Don’t you think that it would be better to assimilate the immigrants into Canadian culture?

Celebrating a culture (bagpipes, dance) is a good thing but to permit ghettos is a bad thing. Multi-culturalism should not extend to language of business or religious teaching (but tolerance ought to be common to all of our various cultures).

4. What cultural features do you think immigrants (Latinos, in particular) should change in order to facilitate the process of assimilation into Canadian culture ?

Language is the biggest barrier to integration.

5. What do you think about the separatism movement in Quebec? Would you like Quebec to be a province or to be an independent entity from Canada? Why?

Quebec joined confederation in 1867 voluntarily and should be free to leave confederation voluntarily. Force or war is no way to hold a country together. I do not believe Quebec could survive on its own but Alberta and BC have a separtist movement and they could survive on their own. They should also be free to leave.

Guillermo,

Saludos
Arturo
